Gateway Signage

Background

This project is based on the Tulsa City Council’s desire to have significant, attractive signage at key entry points into Tulsa. There are three proposed design concepts developed by the Tulsa Planning Office, each prominently incorporating the Tulsa Flag shield and a blend of Art Deco and midcentury aesthetics. The tri-band wing design flanking the words “Welcome to” represent our Art Deco architecture and our history as a leader in aviation.

The signs could number up to 42, depending on construction costs, with priority given to the Gateway Triangles (2), then Welcome Monuments (13), then Local Monuments (27).

Gateway Triangles
The largest signs, Gateway Triangles, feature an inverted triangle with the sides soaring skyward at 66°, a nod to Tulsa being the birthplace of Route 66. At the top of the 42-foot structure is a large Tulsa Flag shield outlined by lighted acrylic that will mimic the look neon. The welcome message will be backlit, as well. The sign is supported by a decorative concrete base stamped with the Tulsa Flag star, surrounded by landscaping.

Welcome Monuments
The next-largest signs, Welcome Monuments, are decorative concrete monument signs inspired by a Zig Zag Art Deco sunburst design with “Welcome to Tulsa” beneath a Tulsa Flag shield, surrounded by landscaping. It is envisioned that the signs will be illuminated with up- or down-lighting.

Local Monuments
Local Monuments are smaller signs designed to welcome people exiting major highways onto Tulsa’s main arterial streets. It is envisioned that the signs will be illuminated with up- or down-lighting.

Timeline

The goal is to have at least the two Gateway Triangle signs in place in time for the Route 66 centennial celebrations scheduled for the end of May 2026, with the rest to follow.

Status

The City of Tulsa is working with LandPlan Consultants to finalize locations and begin construction documents.
